When a tooth has suffered extensive damage where a dental crown or bridge cannot restore the tooth by itself, core buildup is needed. Core buildup builds a foundation for material to create a preferable tooth shape, preventing gaps or other irregularities that could compromise the structure. This treatment is recommended when there is not enough of the tooth left to retain a dental crown due to caries, infection or dental trauma. This usually occurs when less than 50% of the exposed tooth remains.
Buildup materials can vary depending on the individual case, but usually, a dental filling material is built into a structure in order to support a restoration (such as a dental crown or dental bridge). The material is designed to do the following:
With core buildup in place, a dental restoration can be placed. This will help restore the function and appearance of the tooth. If there is not enough tooth to support core buildup, threaded pins or a post may need to be placed. If you have any questions about core buildup, contact our prosthodontist today!
